Awards & Scholarships
The Masonry Society presents a variety of awards and scholarships annually from the categories below.
Fellow membership is conferred upon individuals who have made outstanding contributions to TMS and have maintained membership for no less than 10 consecutive years.
Honorary Membership is the highest honor that TMS can bestow upon a member. It recognizes individuals who have attained acknowledged eminence related to masonry research, design, or construction.
The Research Award was established to honor John B. Scalzi for his leadership in innovative and creative masonry research. It is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding, lifetime contributions to masonry research.
Paul Haller Structural Design Award
The Haller Award is given to an individual engineer or an engineering firm that has enhanced the knowledge of masonry in practice. This award recognizes the beauty, elegance, and economy of structural masonry projects.
Phillip J. Samblanet Service Award
The Phillip J. Samblanet Service Award honors individuals who volunteer their time and talents in meaningful ways reflecting the commitment Phil showed over 25+ years as Executive Director of TMS.
The President’s Award is awarded by the current TMS President to recognize an individual who has made an exceptional contributions to the success of the Society.
North American Masonry Conference (NAMC) Outstanding Paper Awards
Since the 5th North American Masonry Conference in 1990, awards have been presented to recognize outstanding papers presented at the conference.
Outstanding Student Thesis Award
This award is presented to recognize outstanding papers that have been published in TMS Journal.
Outstanding TMS Journal Paper Award
Student Thesis Awards are presented annually to the best doctoral dissertation and master’s thesis on masonry topics.
Clayford T. Grimm, P.E. Student Scholarship
Established in 2007 to honor the memory of Clayford T. Grimm, this Scholarship is awarded every year to a Master’s level graduate student who is conducting research in masonry. The investigation can be in masonry materials, structures, construction, or architecture and must be performed under the direction of a member of The Masonry Society.
James L. Noland Student Fellowship
Established in 1995 to honor the memory of James L. Noland, the Noland Fellowship is awarded every four years to a graduate student who is doing research on masonry. This research can be in materials, structures, architecture, or construction and must be performed under the direction of a member of The Masonry Society.
