Bio/Firm Description: I am the Executive Director and Structural Services Director of the Masonry Institute of Michigan. In this capacity, I am the principal officer of the Institute and responsible for all Institute affairs in support of their mission statement to promote and advance the masonry industry. I am also a part time faculty member at the University of Toledo where I teach Advanced Structural Design in the College of Engineering, Engineering Technology Department. I began working in the engineering industry at the age of 16 by working as a field technician where I tested the compressive strength of concrete and the compaction of fill materials on construction sites. This experience was invaluable to me in my career, as it gave me a better understanding of constructability. After this, I began work as a construction inspector at HNTB Michigan. In this position, I continued learning about construction means and methods. Following this, I worked as a geotechnical engineer at Somat Engineering where I performed the design of deep and shallow foundation systems, and earth retaining structures. I then led the Midwest region at Bergmann as the discipline manager of structural engineering. Subsequently, I worked as a senior structural engineer at Fishbeck in Grand Rapids, MI prior to beginning in my role with MIM. I am the current chairman of the BIM-M subcommittee through The Masonry Society, and I am a voting member on the Structural Members and Design subcommittees for the current TMS 402/602 code cycle.

Bio/Firm Description: David L. Pierson is a Structural Engineer at ARW Engineers in Ogden, Utah. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Utah State University with a B.S. in 1988 and an M.S. in 1989. In 1988 he was honored both as Outstanding Senior in the Civil Engineering Department, and as Valedictorian of the College of Engineering. After Graduation, he began his career at SB&O in San Diego, California, where he worked as a Design Engineer until December of 1991. He then returned to Utah, joining ARW as a Project Engineer. He has remained at ARW since, being advanced to Principal in 1998, and to Vice-President in 2000. Mr. Pierson is actively involved in his profession. He has served on the Board of Directors for The Masonry Society since 2015 and is currently the Vice-Chair of the TMS 402/602 Committee, which develops and maintains the Masonry Design Code provisions for the Building Code. He is a Past-President of the Structural Engineers Association of Utah, and now serves as Legislative Committee Chair for SEAU. He served for 8 years on the Utah Uniform Building Codes Commission and was Chair of that Commission for 3 years. He is an Adjunct Professor at Utah State University, where he teaches Wood and Masonry Design. In 2020, Mr. Pierson was recognized as the Distinguished Alumnus in the Department of Civil Engineering at Utah State University. Also in 2020, he was recognized by the Utah Engineers Council as the Engineer of the Year in the State of Utah.
