Professor Paulo Lorenco, PhD, received the The Masonry Society’s John B. Scalzi Research Award at the Minneapolis meetings of TMS and the North American Masonry Conference June 2011.  The award was presented by Max Porter on behalf of the Research Committee of TMS at the NAMC Banquet.  Dr. Lorenco is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Minho in Guimares, Portugal, where he is also head of the department and head of a research center.  He has authored or co-authored 545 publications, supervised 6 post-doctoral, 26 PhD’s, and 16 master’s students.  He is particularly known for his work in advanced analysis for structural restoration, including many masonry structures, innovative strengthening techniques (including earthquake engineering), NDT, and a consultant for many historical monuments, including the World Heritage Sites.  He also has served as Editor of the International Journal Architectural Heritage: Conservation, Analysis and Restoration and Co-editor of the Conference Series, Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions.  He was honored with a best paper award at the 7th NAMC and supervised the TMS’s 2009 winner of the outstanding PhD dissertation winner.  Quoting a statement in the nomination submittal: “I judge him to be one of the most robust masonry researchers active on the planet…”.
