Guido Magenes, professor of Structural Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, University of Pavia, Italy, was awarded the 2024 John B. Scalzi Research Award at The Masonry Society’s Annual Meeting on October 17, 2024 in Portland, Maine.
The Scalzi Research Award, named after Dr. John Scalzi of the National Science Foundation, honors an individual who has made an outstanding, lifetime contribution to masonry research.
Prof. Magenes has more than three decades of research experience in the areas of seismic analysis, design and assessment of masonry structures. He has authored or coauthored over 200 scientific papers in the field of structural engineering, with emphasis on strategies for repair and rehabilitation of existing masonry structures. His publications have attracted over 12,700 citations as noted on Google Scholar.
For his contributions in the field of the seismic behavior of masonry structures he has been invited as a keynote speaker to several international conferences. He has been recognized with several international awards, including the Timber West award for best paper at the 12th Canadian Masonry Symposium.
Prof Magenes has collaborated with the EUCENTRE Foundation (European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering) in Pavia since its inception in 2004. As head of the Masonry Structures division, he has led several experimental research projects on seismic response of vulnerable masonry buildings. This research base has led to extensive rehabilitation of unreinforced masonry buildings in Italy and Europe, which will no doubt save countless lives as a mitigation to future
earthquakes. Few masonry researchers can claim such an impact on earthquake hazard reduction.
