TMS 403-13 Direct Design Handbook for Masonry Structures
$55.00
TMS 403-13 Direct Design Handbook for Masonry Structures is a handbook providing a streamlined structural design procedure for reinforced concrete and clay masonry structures.
Based on TMS 402-11/ACI 530-11/ASCE 5-11 and ASCE 7-10, this Handbook covers residential and commercial applications within defined snow, wind, and seismic parameters, and is written in mandatory language for direct code adoption. Includes design procedures, material and construction requirements, specifications, details, Commentary, and a worked design example.
Description
Developed by The Masonry Society’s Design Practices Committee, this Handbook establishes a direct procedure for the structural design of single-story, reinforced and unreinforced concrete masonry structures. The procedure is grounded in the strength design provisions of TMS 402-11/ACI 530-11/ASCE 5-11 Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures and ASCE 7-10 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, and applies to both residential and commercial construction.
To minimize calculation demand, design parameters are constrained and options are prescribed. The Handbook applies to common structures across the vast majority of the United States, with applicability limits of mapped ground snow loads up to 60 lb/ft² (2.9 kPa), basic wind speeds up to 200 mph (89.4 m/s), 0.2-second spectral response accelerations up to 3.0g, and 1.0-second spectral response accelerations up to 1.25g.
Written as a consensus standard in mandatory language, the Handbook is suitable for legal adoption as a code alternative to standards addressing a broader range of masonry construction. Technical content includes reference standards, definitions and notations, site and architectural limitations, loading limitations, material and construction requirements, direct design procedures, specifications, and construction details. An accompanying Commentary documents the background analysis, design rationale, and committee deliberations underlying each provision. A non-mandatory Appendix provides a worked example illustrating application of the direct design procedure to a typical masonry building.
