Existing Masonry Standards Committee (EMS)

Members Sought for New Committee

The TMS Board of Directors has approved the creation of the Existing Masonry Standards (EMS) Committee. Current members of the Existing Masonry Guidelines (EMG) Task Group and the Existing Masonry Committee are invited to apply and the Society is seeking additional potential members for this new committee.

Mission

Develop and maintain standard requirements for the assessment, repair, rehabilitation, restoration, retrofit, and preservation of existing masonry buildings for the betterment of the public, while balancing economy to preserve, where possible, the heritage of existing masonry.

Goals

Near Term Goals:

  1. Engage stakeholders and invite their participation in committee activities.
  2. Consider recommendations and the draft provisions developed during the Existing Masonry Guidelines Summit.
  3. Initiate Balloting of proposed revisions to develop a Committee-Approved Working Draft for review by the Technical Activities Committee (TAC).
  4. Consider comments from TAC and the Public and revise the proposed standards as needed while responding to all comments.
  5. Once approved, educate the public on the provisions.

Mid-Term/Long-Term Goals:

  1. Support TMS efforts to have the standard referenced by model building codes and standards.
  2. Based on educational efforts, use of the standards, and other comments/suggestions, ballot proposed revisions to the standards.
  3. Update and enhance the standards as needed.

Activities

  1. Evaluate and ballot proposed provisions for an existing masonry standard related to the assessment, repair, rehabilitation, restoration, retrofit, and preservation of existing masonry buildings.
  2. Educate the public on the standard and the benefits it provides.
  3. Provide interpretations of the standard upon request.
  4. At the request of The Masonry Society, support TMS efforts for referencing of the standard by model building codes and other standards such as ASCE 41.
