Adobe Construction Site Visit

Join TMS on a tour of a load-bearing adobe structure under construction that combines traditional earthen block construction with contemporary craftsmanship. Albuquerque Joinery’s latest project is in the Los Griegos neighborhood of Albuquerque’s North Valley and consists of two adobe masonry buildings – a 1,750 sq ft house, and an 800 sq ft workshop – situated on a small, agricultural lot. The property is in an historically rich neighborhood with many adobe structures; these new buildings were designed to complement the existing architecture and use similar traditional methods of construction. Both buildings are built with semi-stabilized adobe bricks, with solid timber bond beams throughout. While the walls of the house will be insulated and stuccoed, the workshop’s finished exterior will remain exposed adobe. Construction began in May 2023. In a tour led by the designer and contractors, attendees will learn about traditional and modern adobe construction, see examples of adobe detailing, and discuss the design and permitting process.

Albuquerque Joinery is a small design-build company that specializes in new home construction using traditional adobe building techniques. They also produce one-of-a-kind doors, custom cabinetry, and fine woodworking in general.

Separate fee of $30 per person and advance registration required. Includes tour and transportation. Please wear clothing suitable for a construction site.

Albuquerque Museum & Downtown Walking Tour

Established in 1967, Albuquerque Museum is a leading institution for art, history, and culture in the Southwest. Located in the heart of Old Town, the Museum celebrates art in New Mexico. Characterized by celebration of tradition, innovation within heritage, and groundbreaking developments of new forms and ideas, people of diverse cultures have lived together and influenced each other since the arrival of humans more than 13,000 years ago. No other place in the United States can celebrate such an important and continuous history of art making, from pre-history to the experiments of today. Current exhibitions at the museum include the Sculpture Garden (the sculpture garden includes works by many of the most important sculptors of the American Southwest and A Garden, an eco-art installation designed by UNM Art & Ecology students and faculty); the Georgia O’Keeffe and Henry Moore exhibition (re-creates both O’Keeffe’s and Moore’s studios and features more than 120 works of art by the two artists); and Common Ground which celebrates the diverse creativity of artists living in or influenced by this region (drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection of almost 10,000 works of art, Common Ground includes masterworks by artists including Georgia O’Keeffe, Ernest Blumenschein, Raymond Jonson, Fritz Scholder, Luis Jimenez, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, and Diego Romero); News For The People: Local Journalism in the 1970s examines how journalism informs and protects democracy; and many other exhibits.

Downtown Walking Tour

A docent from the museum will lead a walking tour of Old Downtown and the historic Route 66 as it goes through Albuquerque. This informative tour will highlight buildings from the 1700s, the fabulous Route 66 years, and current trends.

A separate fee of $45 per person and advance registration required. Fee includes museum entrance fee, guided walking tour, and transportation. Comfortable walking shoes and weather appropriate clothing suggested.
