Albuquerque, New Mexico

Nowhere is the confluence of past and present more dramatic than in Albuquerque, where the modern city skyline is set against a backdrop of the stunning Sandia Mountains and an endless, timeless blue sky.

Located in the Albuquerque Basin, the city is flanked by the Sandia Mountains to the east and the West Mesa to the west, with the Rio Grande and bosque flowing north-to-south through the middle of the city.

Albuquerque is rightly famed for its International Balloon Fiesta, which takes place each October and is the largest gathering of its kind in the world. But Burqueños know there’s a lot more to love in the state’s capital (which was named after a Spanish duke) including almost limitless sunshine, interesting architecture, and a food scene that goes way beyond green chili.

Albuquerque was founded in 1706, and the adobe buildings in Historic Old Town aren’t to be missed. Step into the 1792 San Felipe de Neri Church, a popular spot for weddings, and browse the boutiques and galleries surrounding the plaza.

The nearby Albuquerque Museum has a great collection of colonial artifacts and several works by Georgia O’Keeffe. Vintage fans can get a (neon) glow-up along Central Avenue, part of historic Route 66.

For a bird’s-eye view of the city and the Sangre De Cristo Mountains, take the 2.7-mile aerial tramway up to Sandia Peak. Get outside at Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge or the nearby Petroglyph National Monument which protects one of the largest petroglyph sites in North America, featuring designs and symbols carved onto volcanic rocks. Check out the nightly flamenco dance performances. Albuquerque is the capital of the North American National Institute of Flamenco.

Construction Site Visit / Museum & Walking Tour

Adobe Construction Site Visit
Wed, November 8, 7:30-10:00 AM

Join TMS on a tour of a load-bearing adobe structure under construction that combines traditional earthen block construction with contemporary craftsmanship. Albuquerque Joinery’s latest project is in the Los Griegos neighborhood of Albuquerque’s North Valley and consists of two adobe masonry buildings – a 1,750 sq ft house, and an 800 sq ft workshop – situated on a small, agricultural lot. The property is in an historically rich neighborhood with many adobe structures; these new buildings were designed to complement the existing architecture and use similar traditional methods of construction. Both buildings are built with semi-stabilized adobe bricks, with solid timber bond beams throughout. While the walls of the house will be insulated and stuccoed, the workshop’s finished exterior will remain exposed adobe. Construction began in May 2023. In a tour led by the designer and contractors, attendees will learn about traditional and modern adobe construction, see examples of adobe detailing, and discuss the design and permitting process.

Albuquerque Joinery is a small design-build company that specializes in new home construction using traditional adobe building techniques. They also produce one-of-a-kind doors, custom cabinetry, and fine woodworking in general.

Separate fee of $30 per person and advance registration required. Includes tour and transportation. Please wear clothing suitable for a construction site.
