About the Presenters
Richard Bennett, Ph.D, P.E. is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Bennett has been very active in the Masonry Standards Joint Committee which writes the Building Code for Masonry Structures. He has chaired the Flexural, Axial Loads, and Shear subcommittee and served as the vice-chair of the 2013 MSJC Committee. Dr. Bennett was the chair of the main committee for the 2016 402/602 code. He is 2nd vice chair for the next code cycle, which will develop the 2022 TMS 402/602 provisions. He is an author, reviewer and major contributor to the Masonry Designer’s Guide, TMS Responds, and TMS Journal.
John M. Hochwalt SE, PE, Associate and Director of Engineering for the Seattle Structural Group of KPFF Consulting Engineers. His work has included the design of new facilities, renovations, seismic retrofits, cladding design and preservation of historic structures. Mr. Hochwalt is the co-author of the Reinforced Masonry Engineering Handbook and the Design Guide for Structural Brick Veneer. He teaches review courses on masonry design for both SEAW and NCSEA. He is also active in code development for the masonry industry; for the 2022 code cycle he is a voting member of the TMS 402/602 Main Committee and Chair of the Seismic and Limit States Design Subcommittee. He is an author, reviewer and major contributor to the Masonry Designer’s Guide and TMS Responds.
